What is Acupuncture? Diana Pullen, Acupuncturist

Acupuncture is part of the traditional medicine of China, which is based on thousands of years of study, research, observation and experience.

It is used to promote and maintain good health and to restore the sick, unwell or unhappy to a state of good health and well- being.

Traditional acupuncture works to maintain the body’s equilibrium by focusing on all areas of discomfort in order to be able to recognise the full landscape of the client’s health, that is, the particular patterns of disharmony as understood in the Chinese system of medical theory.

This state of balance is achieved by the insertion of fine sterile needles at

particular points on the body which are sensitive to and can influence the flow of subtle energy (‘qi’) which flows beneath the skin at varying depths.

The nature of the holistic system necessitates extensive history taking for which an extra hour is allowed at the first consultation. This is then followed in the second hour and in subsequent visits by pulse taking and checking the appearance of the tongue.

A back massage is then given which relaxes the client and further informs me.

The last half-hour is the time for insertion of the needles in appropriate points, where they remain for 20-30 minutes whilst the client rests on the couch.

This is a surprisingly pleasant experience and usually induces a state of deep relaxation and well- being .

How can acupuncture help me?

Traditional Acupuncture can be beneficial for a wide range of illnesses and symptoms, from clearly defined complaints such as headaches, vomiting, pain, insomnia and swellings to more general feelings of ill health such as nausea, low energy, unhappiness and low motivation, or vague aches.

Common disorders treated can be of eyes, ears, nose and throat; gastro-intestinal; genito-urinary; gynaecological; immune system; musculo-skeletal; neurological; respiratory; emotional and psychological.

Many women choose to have treatment throughout pregnancy and childbirth. In addition acupuncture is used to help infertility or to support IVF procedures.

Two areas of special interest and success for Diana’s Acupuncture work are in pregnancy, childbirth and problems of infertility; and musculo- skeletal disorders, particularly back pain and sciatica.
