What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) developed from the work of  William Garner Sutherland  (1873-1954) who studied subtle rhythmic movements in the craniosacral system (the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord). Since then it has continued to evolve, taking in approaches from other fields such as trauma resolution therapy.

No manipulation or massage is used. Rather the therapist uses a very light contact made with the hands to listen deeply to the clients system. This opens up a kind of silent conversation in which the natural intelligence and healing capacity of the body can be utilised to release held patterns of tension and restore healthy movement and function. The therapist is really a facilitator whose job is to hold the space and be a fulcrum around which the body can let go of what is unhealthy and find its own path to health.

What is a session like?

Craniosacral therapy is different for everyone. You may feel a deep sense of relaxation, and possibly become aware of heat, tingling, pulsations or other sensations.
Sometimes people may experience momentary pain as held patterns are released. When this settles the net result is one of feeling better.
People often feel as if things are reorganising inside them or as if a weight has been lifted from their shoulders.

What conditions is it useful for?

It is suitable for a wide range of conditions and can often be helpful in cases where the cause of symptoms is unknown or those which have not responded to more conventional treatments. It works well with other therapies including supporting those undergoing conventional medical treatment.

Because this way of working cooperates with the body  and doesn’t impose anything  from the outside it is very safe and can be used in fragile conditions, with elderly clients or where there has been considerable trauma.

Conditions that clients come with can vary from physical problems such as back or neck pain to emotional difficulties or cases of shock and PTSD.

Some particular conditions that can repond well to treatment include: Autism, Joint disorders, Chronic Fatigue,  Digestive problems, ME, Fibomalayga, Headaches and Migraines, Nervous disorders, and Insomnia.

  A client’s view

“My body felt much freer and lighter and I felt so peaceful and more comfortable in my own skin after yesterday’s Craniosacral Therapy treatment with Mike. I would recommend this gentle non invasive treatment to everybody. As Mike worked, I was fascinated to experience my body’s physical reactions to energy blockages/ trauma bubbling up and gently dissipating. I slept deeply and peacefully for a full 8+ hours straight last night. Didn’t wake once. First time in weeks! Many thanks!”  Rebecca.

About Mike

My first career was as a teacher.  I became interested in Craniosacral therapy through my own experience with it. It made me feel more alive and at home with my body.
I completed my training with the Institute of Craniosacral Studies in 2006 and CST has been an important part of my life since then.
