Buteyko Breathing for Asthma

Buteyko Breathing Technique

Judy Dickenson

The Buteyko Breathing Technique helps many conditions including

  • asthma and other lung conditions
  • sinus problems
  • sleep apnoea or snoring
  • anxiety and panic attacks
  • recurrent colds or chest infections

It has been proved so effective in clinical trials that the NHS now recommend it in their guidelines on asthma.
By practising breathing techniques that reduce over-breathing (hyper-ventilation), you can return to a relaxed and healthy way of breathing. This can reduce or eliminate asthma (trials showed a 90% reduction in reliever use in the first few weeks and a gradual reduction in steroid use over a few months). Many other conditions are also related to breathing and hence also benefit from this breathing method.

The course content I offer includes:

  • clearing your nose and nose-breathing at all times
  • relaxing and reducing your breathing down to healthy levels
  • breathing with your diaphragm and with good posture
  • how to breathe when exercising
  • breathing when talking or singing
  • the connections with anxiety and other negative states
  • how to reduce coughing and hay-fever symptoms; breathing during illnesses
  • advice on diet and allergens

The Buteyko technique is based on a scientific knowledge of breathing, and is complementary to the drugs available on the NHS - you can understand your breathing condition better and how to use your medication most helpfully, as well as reducing your dependence on it.
It can be learnt one-to-one or in small groups and is suitable for children as well as adults of any age.
Concessions are available for low income.

I had asthma myself for thirty years until I used the Buteyko breathing techniques. I trained to teach it in 2005. I have three children.
