What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a therapy in which physical methods are used to help the body heal. Methods which can be used include electroptherapy, mobilisation, passive movements, massage and acupuncture. Exercises and advice may be given alongside these methods to complement the treatment given.
Methods
Electrotherapy; here a machine is used to give pain relief. Ultrasound uses sound waves to improve circulation, reduce muscle spasm and pain, and has a mild sedative efect on pain nerve endings.
Mobilisation; small movements are made on joints to correct alignment and reduce pain.
Exercise; Movements such as exercise are used to restore muscle strength, mobility and balance. For example, retraction may be taught as an exercise to reduce neck pain and improve strength. This has the effect of improving posture.
Acupuncture; Very fine needles are inserted into the skin on energy lines called meridians. Once in the needles release energy, improve circulation and enhance well being. The effect is to improve relaxation, reduce pain and aid in a good night's sleep.
